Inspiration
I Take You To Be My Ex is inspired by Eyes Wide Shut by Stanley Kubrick. I wrote it in a frenzy. Sometimes characters start talking and you must try and catch it all. I was interested to explore a difficult conversation devoid of distraction. I had the characters dress up and walk into a ritual, like two boxers, one determined to be right over the other. I have always loved films that stay on an actor's face, Manchester By The Sea, Shame, Badlands, and Persona. A task for the cinematographer, the actor and the editor but one we all welcomed. I wanted to look at mistakes and mess and forgiveness.
We made the film the weekend before Christmas. My first film was a love letter to New York and my second film is a love letter to the Crew. Their never-ending work ethic, generosity and kindness is the reason I am a filmmaker. I Take You To Be My Ex looks at a relationship falling apart, but through every frame is the beauty of friendship and collaboration.
